Where The Wild Things Are
I remember this book from when I went to elementary school. My mom and dad used to read it to me. I like to share it with my class now. I use it to teach fantasy and fiction versus reality. Max in the book goes from being a boy in his home to leaving to visit a fictional world of wild things. He later returns to reality at the end of the book for dinner. I also like to teach how stories can be told without words. There is a section in the book where there are no words. It is during the "wild rumpus". I think this book by Maurice Sendak will always be a classic.

Trevor,
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty slick blog you have. I really like the idea of posting about books that you read to your students. I really liked the Pigeon books that teach about punctuation. I am not sure if my school has them, but I know my 3rd graders could benefit from hearing them a few times! I need to find a way to make punctuation stick! I know it is taught over and over in every grade, but students still seem to struggle with capitalization and periods!
I think sharing this literature with students is such a powerful way to back up other subjects that we are required to teach. It makes it a lot more fun for our students. I have a few books that I read every year to my students. I get to do quite a few chapter books with third graders. One of my favorites last year was "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo, it is a chapter book, but it is not too long. I bet it could be used in a second grade classroom. I found it to be very powerful. I also read the Wayside School books by Louis Sachar.
As far as picture books go, my students love Skippy Jon Jones by Judith Byron Schachner. These are great for student imagination. They also give teachers a chance to try out some crazy voices!
Anyway, this idea to post book reviews on your blog is excellent.
Oh, and I hope your classes have been going well. I am pretty glad to be almost done for the summer. I am only doing one class per semester during the school year, so it should be pretty nice. I will be in the Ethics class in the fall, I am looking forward to it. I bet you are also!

I haven't read this book but I heard it was a good one. I guess since they made a movie about it then it must be good. I have found that even though I teach fifth grade the students still enjoy a good picture book once in a while. I appreciate you sharing the book reviews, it will help me to find some good books for my students as well.
